Review Snapshot

What You Need to Know

MetaMask Card connects eligible wallet assets to a card transaction without requiring a conventional exchange top-up. That is useful, but β€œspend from your wallet” is only the first layer: token permissions, the card programme and payment-network partners all remain part of the route.

The current FAQ says new signups are paused in the US and UK. It describes a virtual card, while the metal-card programme is also paused. Existing users and other eligible markets should check the live Card tab rather than relying on an old UK/EEA availability sentence.

Product Basics

What Is MetaMask Card?

MetaMask Card extends a MetaMask wallet into eligible merchant spending through a card programme. The user still completes identity verification and grants supported-token permissions for the card spending contract.

In practical terms, an eligible applicant connects a wallet, completes KYC, configures the supported assets and receives a virtual card. The current FAQ says metal card ordering is paused, so this review does not present a physical card as generally available.

The route also relies on Baanx, Monovate and Mastercard according to MetaMask's FAQ. Those partners help provide issuance and settlement; the merchant is not receiving a direct onchain transfer from the user's wallet.

Key Feature

The Non-Custodial Model: What It Actually Means

"Non-custodial" is a phrase that gets thrown around loosely in crypto card marketing. MetaMask Card's model is worth examining carefully, because it's genuinely different from most crypto cards β€” but also not fully trustless.

With a typical custodial crypto card (Binance Card, Crypto.com Card, Nexo Card, etc.), you deposit funds into a company-held account. The company holds your money. If the company has a problem, your funds are at risk. The card is a product of the custodial relationship.

With MetaMask Card, funds stay in your own MetaMask wallet until you spend. The card authorization process interfaces with your wallet directly, triggering the on-chain movement of funds at point of sale. You are not pre-depositing into someone else's account.

That said, the settlement layer β€” converting your ETH to fiat for the merchant β€” necessarily involves intermediaries. MetaMask Card is best described as a hybrid model: the custody approach is meaningfully better than traditional custodial cards, but the payment rails involve third parties. It is not the same as paying for your coffee with a hardware wallet and zero counterparty involvement.

For most users, this distinction is practically important. Your ETH is not locked in a centralized platform while you wait to spend it. It stays in your wallet until you actually transact.

DeFi Integration

The Web3 Angle: Spending EVM Tokens Without Leaving Your Ecosystem

Who this is built for

MetaMask Card is not trying to serve everyone. It's specifically designed for users who already live in the Ethereum ecosystem β€” people who hold ETH, interact with DeFi protocols, hold ERC-20 tokens, and use MetaMask as their daily wallet.

For those users, the traditional crypto card experience is frustrating. You hold ETH in MetaMask, but to spend it you have to transfer to an exchange, convert to fiat, wait for settlement, and then use a separate card. MetaMask Card collapses that flow significantly: you spend directly from the wallet you're already using, without needing a separate custodial platform.

This isn't just convenience β€” it's also custody hygiene. Every time you move funds to a custodial platform to use a card, you're accepting counterparty risk. MetaMask Card reduces the number of times you need to do that.

Supported assets and chains

MetaMask Card supports ETH and ERC-20 tokens on EVM-compatible chains. This covers a large portion of the DeFi ecosystem β€” USDC, USDT, DAI, WETH, and many other tokens are all ERC-20 compatible.

  • ETH β€” the primary spending asset
  • ERC-20 tokens including USDC, USDT, and DAI
  • EVM-compatible chain support
  • No Bitcoin or non-EVM chain support currently

Bitcoin holders or users with assets on Solana, Cosmos, or other non-EVM chains will need to bridge or swap before using MetaMask Card. The card is Ethereum-ecosystem-first by design.

Fees

Fees: Simple, But Not Fully Transparent

The current FAQ says there is no annual or monthly card fee, but a small transaction fee applies. That distinction is more useful than calling the card simply β€œfree.”

MetaMask says it does not add a foreign-exchange fee. That does not rule out card-network conversion, merchant dynamic currency conversion or an unfavorable choice at checkout. Always select the local currency rather than accepting DCC without comparison.

ATM use is limited in scope and should not be assumed from the Mastercard logo. Check both card eligibility and the live ATM rule before relying on it for travel cash.

  • No annual or monthly card fee in the current FAQ.
  • A small card transaction fee applies.
  • MetaMask adds no FX fee; DCC and network conversion are separate.
  • Blockchain fees may apply when managing token approvals.

Pros and Cons

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Wallet-native spending can remove a separate exchange top-up step.
  • The provider explains supported-token permissions before card spending.
  • No annual or monthly card fee is listed in the current FAQ.
  • MetaMask says it does not add a foreign-exchange fee.
  • A virtual card can support eligible online and wallet-based spending.

Cons

  • New signups are currently paused in both the United States and United Kingdom.
  • Requires MetaMask wallet β€” not accessible to non-MetaMask users without onboarding.
  • Full KYC required β€” despite MetaMask's non-custodial wallet reputation, card requires identity verification.
  • A small transaction fee applies even though no added FX fee is advertised.
  • The metal card is paused and should not be presented as generally orderable.
  • ATM access is limited in scope and should be checked before relying on cash withdrawals.

Risk

Security, KYC, and the Self-Custody Reality Check

KYC is mandatory

Despite MetaMask's non-custodial wallet roots, the card requires full identity verification. This is unavoidable for a regulated Mastercard product. MetaMask Card is not a privacy-first tool β€” it's a regulated financial product that happens to use a non-custodial wallet infrastructure.

Geographic limits

New signups are currently paused in the US and UK according to the provider FAQ. Other eligibility depends on the live programme. Existing wallet use does not guarantee card issuance.

Tax and on-chain records

Spending ETH or ERC-20 tokens creates on-chain records of every transaction. In many jurisdictions, spending crypto (even stablecoins) may create taxable events. The on-chain nature of MetaMask Card actually makes your transaction history more auditable than a custodial card β€” which can be an advantage for tax compliance, or a concern if you value privacy.

Fit

Who MetaMask Card Is Best For

Best for

  • DeFi users who hold ETH and ERC-20 tokens and want to spend without off-ramping to an exchange.
  • Eligible users in an active programme who understand wallet permissions.
  • MetaMask power users who already use the wallet daily and want card functionality in the same ecosystem.
  • Users who can work with a virtual card and the current geographic limitations.
  • Early adopters who want to be part of the first generation of non-custodial spending cards.

Less ideal for

  • New applicants in the US or UK while the signup pauses remain in place.
  • Privacy advocates β€” full KYC is required despite the non-custodial wallet framing.
  • People who want a physical metal card immediately β€” ordering is paused.
  • Non-MetaMask users who would need to onboard to a new wallet just to get the card.
  • Users who do not want to grant or manage token spending permissions.

Alternatives

MetaMask Card vs Other Crypto Cards

The natural comparison with Gnosis Pay begins with wallet architecture, eligibility and current feesβ€”not an old reward badge. Gnosis Pay's accessible intermediary GNO cashback programme ended on June 30, 2026, so it should not be shown as a current β€œup to 5%” alternative.

Against a custodial exchange card, compare MetaMask's token permissions and partner stack with the alternative's deposited balance and exchange counterparty risk. Those are structural differences; promotional percentages can change much faster.

A wider card-network footprint does not prove applicant eligibility. For example, RedotPay maintains a current restricted-country list that includes the United States and Morocco. Check residence first for every alternative.

In one sentence: MetaMask Card is best for eligible wallet users who understand token approvals and can work within the current virtual-card and signup constraints.

Final Verdict

The Vision Is Right β€” the Execution Is a Work in Progress

MetaMask Card has a useful wallet-native design, but it is still a regulated card product with KYC, token permissions and issuance partners. The present US and UK signup pauses and paused metal card materially narrow who can act on the product today.

Eligible applicants should focus on the small transaction fee, supported assets, approval limits and recovery security. β€œNo added FX fee” is useful but does not eliminate DCC, network conversion or blockchain costs.

CryptoCardHQ assessment: technically distinctive, but availability must be confirmed live and the wallet-to-card permission path deserves the same attention as fees.

FAQ

Quick Answers

Is MetaMask Card self-custodial?

MetaMask Card uses a hybrid model β€” funds remain in your MetaMask wallet until the moment of spending. This is closer to self-custody than traditional custodial cards, though the payment settlement process involves intermediaries. It is not fully trustless, but it is a meaningfully different model from cards that hold your funds in a company account.

What tokens can I spend with MetaMask Card?

ETH and ERC-20 tokens on EVM-compatible chains. Support for specific tokens depends on the current configuration and may expand over time. Check the MetaMask Card app for the current list of supported assets.

Is MetaMask Card available in the US?

MetaMask's current FAQ says new US signups are paused. It also says new UK signups are paused. Existing access and other eligible markets may differ, so check the live Card tab rather than relying on an old country list.

Does MetaMask Card require KYC?

Yes β€” despite MetaMask's non-custodial wallet reputation, the card product requires full identity verification. This is required for payment network compliance and is standard for any regulated card product, regardless of whether the underlying wallet is self-custodial.

What fees should I check?

The current FAQ lists no annual or monthly card fee and says MetaMask adds no FX fee, but a small transaction fee applies. Merchant DCC, card-network conversion, ATM and blockchain costs are separate layers and may still affect the total.
